School Threat Assessments

A Threat Assessment Team, mandated by the state Code, is in place in Nottoway County Public Schools.

Supt. Dr. Tameshia Grimes told the School Board last Thursday night that the team includes School Resource Officers and its goal is to be “preventative — not punitive or adversarial…A critical aspect involves school community members reporting any potential threats in a timely and accurate manner.”

Dr. Grimes said the team “makes sure that parents of students who receive Threat Assessments know that it is not punishment. We just really want to maintain a safe environment…The purpose is to assess and intervene with individuals who present as a threat to the safety of school staff and students.”

Dr. Grimes said the word “individual” is emphasized because potential threats “may come from someone other than a student.”
