The Design Committee of Downtown Blackstone, Inc. (DBI) has come up with the above image for the Town’s two promotional billboards on Rt. 460. The new covers will replace those (lower left) that were installed in April 2014.
The new design’s photo shows some of the same buildings downtown that are featured in the current design — but from a different angle. It also keeps the “Shop-Eat-Explore” slogan with the addition of the American flag — paying tribute to nearby “Camp Pickett,” which became “Fort Pickett” in 1974 and “Fort Barfoot” in 2024.
Gone from the design are the words “Historic” and “Enjoy,” which are on the current billboards. The new design includes the Town seal and “Welcome to Blackstone” greeting. The Town in coming weeks is expected to seek bids on the two new covers.
One Town billboard is located on Rt. 460 West near Yellowbird
Road, and the other is located on Rt. 460 East near Rt. 614. The Town in 2014 paid a total of $11,250 to update the billboards, which were first erected in 1997.
Blackstone’s first billboards (not shown) were maroon in color, urged motorists to visit Historic Blackstone, featured the Town seal, and included the words “Gas, Food, Shops, Lodging.”
